Elementary - The Great Race
Main Point: I Will Keep On Worshiping God Every Day!
Bible Verse: “I will praise you every day; yes, I will praise you forever.” Psalm 145:2 (NLT)
Bible Story: The people celebrate and worship God. (Nehemiah 12:27-47)
Main Point Review Activity:
Give family members a piece of paper with the Main Point written on it. Have them each take some time (From five minutes to twenty, depending on the age of your children) to decorate the paper in a way that emphasizes how to worship God. Then, come back together and share them with each other.
Try This!
The Jewish people worshiped God because He had blessed them, and they had great joy. God has blessed us, too.
• We need to worship Him and praise Him every day.
• This week, gather as a family and make a list of the many ways God had blessed you.
• Then spend a little time worshipping as a family together.
• You could spend some time in prayer together thanking God for His blessings.
• You could put a worship CD in the stereo and sing along with it.
• However your family chooses to worship God together, make it a special time of remembering what God has done for you and your family.

Main Point: I Will Stay Calm When I Am Angry!
Bible Story: Nehemiah stays calm when he’s angry (Nehemiah 4)
Bible Verse: “So let’s not get tired of doing what is good.” Galatians 6:9a (NLT)
Family Activity Keep Calm
One of the best ways you can help your child learn to stay calm when they are angry is to teach them how to stay calm.
Work together as a family to make a “How To Stay Calm” poster. Come up with four to five ways to stay calm and include those on the poster. (Examples: Take 3 deep breaths. Count to 10. Walk away. Sing a song.)
Find or draw a picture that reminds everyone of each of these ways to stay calm and put it on the poster. Place the poster in a prominent place in the house so you can point it out when you see someone getting angry.
Pray each day and ask God to help you stay calm when you get angry.

Main Point: I Will Keep On Obeying God!
Bible Verse: “If you obey my decrees and my regulations, you will find life through them. I am the LORD.” Leviticus 18:5 (NLT)
Bible Story: The wall of Jerusalem is completed and God’s laws are read. (Nehemiah 8, 9:1-4, 10)
Main Point Review Activity:
Play a game of “Mother, May I” as a family. Each time family members are given an instruction, they should say the Main Point, instead of “Mother, May I,” before they obey and do the instruction given.
Try This!
Nehemiah and the Jewish people heard the book of law and immediately began obeying God’s laws.
• There are rules and people we need to obey too. We need to obey what God tells us to do in the bible.
• We need to obey our parents and teachers.
• This week, take a trip to a nearby playground or park.
• Let all family members take turns being the leader and making up the rules.
• Play a game of “Follow the Leader” with your family.
• When someone gets tired and wants to stop, remind him or her that we need to keep on obeying!

Main Point: I Will Share My Things!
Bible Story: Jonathan shares with David
(1 Samuel 18:1- 4)
Bible Verse: “So let’s not get tired of doing what is good.” Galatians 6:9a (NLT)
Family Activity - Share My Things
Make a plan as a family to share something with someone else. You can either choose a family to share with or each person can choose a friend to share with. Work together on the plan, and then carry it out together. Once you have shared something, ask the following questions:
• How did it make you feel to share something with someone else?
• What else can you share with others?
• Who can you share with?
Make plans to continue sharing your things with others and make it a way of life for your family. Wrap up conversation by praying and asking God to give you opportunities to share your things with others.

Main Point: I Will Keep Doing What Is Right And Not Get Distracted!
Bible Verse: “... let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us.” Hebrews 12:1b (NLT)
Bible Story: Enemies try to distract and trick Nehemiah. (Nehemiah 6:1-16)
Main Point Review Activity:
Write each word of the Main Point on a large piece of paper. Place the papers around the house. Take more paper and make a pile of crumpled paper balls. Place these in your living area. Take turns and have each family member race around the house collecting all the words of the Main Point and then come back to the living area. Once in the living area, the family member should work at putting the words in the correct order. While he or she is doing this, throw the paper balls and try to distract him or her.
Try This!
Nehemiah had a job to do, but there were three men who were determined to stop him from finishing the wall. Nehemiah would not be distracted, though, and he continued doing his job. This week, take a family trip to a local park.
• Create an obstacle course on the playground and take turns letting each family member run the course. For instance, you might have to swing 10 times, go across the monkey bars twice, and run around the playground three times.
• While a family member is racing through the course, have the other family members try and distract the racer.
• They could try to entice the racer to another part of the playground, try to show the racer something, or jump up and down singing.
• The racer should try to stay focused and finish the obstacle course without getting distracted.
• After each person has had a turn at the obstacle course, let everyone do it again and keep time to see who is the fastest racer. Take a picture of the winner.
• Place the picture on the refrigerator as a reminder that God wants us to endure temptations and distractions, and keep doing what is right.

Main Point: I Will Not Give Up When Things Go Wrong!
Bible Story: Paul’s Shipwreck (Acts 27)
Bible Verse: “So let’s not get tired of doing what is good.” Galatians 6:9a (NLT)
Family Activity Something Is Missing!
Plan a family game night. Ahead of time, hide something that’s important from the game. You might hide the dice, the playing pieces, or the cards that go with the game. Begin to play the game and when something goes wrong, stop and talk about how you might want to give up. Encourage the children to think of a way to get around the problem and not give up.
For example, if you hide the playing pieces, ask the children to find other objects around the house to use instead. If you have hidden the dice, you could make a spinner or use numbered cards to designate how many spaces to move.
After you have played the game, talk about times when you might want to give up. Encourage your children to not give up when something goes wrong. Instead remind them to pray and ask God to help them keep going.

Main Point: I Will Keep On Being Generous!
Bible Verse: “Give generously to the poor, not grudgingly, for the Lord your God will bless you in everything you do.” Deuteronomy 15:10 (NLT)
Bible Story: Nehemiah is generous to the Israelites. (Nehemiah 5:14-19)
Main Point Review Activity:
Cut out circles, or coins, from paper. Write each word of the Main Point on each circle. Make enough for each family member to have one complete set of words. Place each set in an envelope or small bag. Sit in a circle together as a family and deliver the gift of coins to each family member. Then have family members open their bags or envelopes of coins and see who can put the Main Point in order the quickest.
Try This!
Nehemiah was generous with others. He used his own money and food to help the people. God wants us to be generous too. This week, sit down as a family and make a chores chart.
• Assign each person at least two specific jobs to do around the house.
• After the chart is made, let family members have the opportunity to make up a job on their own and add it to the chart.
• Then, have family members be generous with someone else and take one of someone else’s jobs away from him or her. For instance, if your brother has to take out the trash, you could take that job and offer to do it for him.
• They should write their names over the job on the chart to show they are going to do the job instead.
• Just as Nehemiah gave of his own food and money to others, you will be giving generously using you time and effort.
• Post the chart up in your home to use as a guide for this week. Encourage
• Family members to continue giving generously throughout the week by following the chart and generously helping each other.

Main Point: I Will Tell The Truth!
Bible Story: Jacob deceives Isaac (Genesis 27)
Bible Verse: “So let’s not get tired of doing what is good.” Galatians 6:9a (NLT)
Family Activity Eye Spy The Truth
Ask your family to join you in a game of Eye Spy. In this game, promise that you will always tell your family the truth about what you spy. Begin by choosing an object to spy. Say, “I spy something (color or description),” and have your family begin to guess what the object is. Continue to add details to the description of the object and have your family guess each time.
Example:
Clue 1: I spy something that is red.
Guess: It’s a ball.
Clue 2: No. I spy something that is red and yellow.
Guess: It’s the toy over there.
Clue 3: No, I spy something that is red and yellow and it’s also very long.
Guess: It’s the fishing pole!
Once someone has figured out what the object is, remind them you always told them the truth when you were describing the object. Let the person who guessed the Eye Spy object lead the next round. At the end of the game, pray and ask God to help each person in the family remember to tell the truth.
